Gator Hides

Creative Aztec tans almost all of the alligator hides we use for our gator skin purses, wallets and other products. Gator Hides and skins can either be tanned with the scales on or off. For a real natural looking alligator leather the scales are left on. If the alligator leather requires a specific color the scales are removed and tanned without them so the gator hide can be dyed later. The hides can be sold by the piece or as an entire alligator.

BARK TAN HIDES:               

These hides have been dual tanned.  First they are tanned using a regular tanning agent and then placed in a vat of bark tan.  The bark tan is formulated with natural tree bark that has an excellent tanning property.   This is an old method vegetable tanning material that produces various rich shades of brown. There is no better natural leather dye like tree bark. The hide is very soft and easy to use.

"CRUSTED" HIDE COLOR

These hides are tanned and no additional coloring (dye) has been added.  The hides are tanned using a regular tanning agent which produces a well tanned hide without adding any additional color from the tanning process.  The only coloring you see is from the natural pigment in the alligator's skin.

Can be dyed almost any color you want with leather dyes.

NATURAL HIDE COLORING

These hides are tanned using a tanning agent which produces a well tanned hide without adding any additional color from the tanning process. This type of tanning agent has been one of the staples in the taxidermy industry for years. 

To achieve a "natural" looking hide, the scales are left on.  This type of tanning lets the skin look just like the alligator did when it was alive.  Typically the skins are not as soft as ones where the scales have been removed, but, you can still create unique items. Just take a look at our Handbag or Wallet pages. The scales can crack and/or pop off, however that does not effect the overall appearance very much - if necessary you can add a little dye in areas that need it. 

"Black" or "Dark Brown" hides

These hides have been dual tanned.  First they are tanned using a regular tanning agent and then they go into bark tan.  The bark tan is formulated with natural tree bark that has an excellent tanning property.   This is an old method vegetable tanning material that produces various rich shades of brown. There is no better natural leather dye like tree bark.  

After coming out of the bark tan the hides are placed in a tank of water that contains "rusty" metal pieces.  A chemical reaction occurs between the tannins in the tree bark and the rust in the water.  This reaction turns the hides a very unique greyish/brownish/black color - sometimes almost completely black without adding any additional chemical dyes.  Produces very unique blend of coloring.   The hides are very soft and easy to use.
